Q&A: How Can I Become "Seed Independent"?
Want to never buy seed again? Here's how!
Today, I am introducing a Q&A component to the Successful Seed Saving 101 program. Thanks to Eleanor Wright for this question: “How can I become ‘seed independent’? What were the steps you followed to get there?”
So for those of you who haven’t known me for as many years as Eleanor has, she is referring to a period of time when I lived on a smaller farm (without livestock) and I had hit the ultimate goal of being entirely independent of purchased seed, aka Seed Independent.
Why is this an important seed saving goal?
Well, there are a few VERY compelling reasons:
First and foremost - You never have to struggle with the ever-increasing cost of buying seed again for your staple crops. It makes all your garden food free moving forward.
Second, it means you never have to worry that your favorite variety is going to get dropped out of a catalogue or go out of production (and this has definitely happened to me numerous times during my gardening career).
Third, it is a powerful way to take full control over your food supply and health because you know EXACTLY what you are eating and how it was grown.
And lastly, in today’s era of corporate control over all aspects of our lives and wellbeing, seed saving to the point of independence is an effective act of political defiance that helps you and the planet.
Pretty amazing results when you consider that a year’s worth of garden of seed often takes up less space than a shoebox.
So let’s dive into this question in more detail.
