Hi my friends,
I didn’t want to miss the opportunity to send you a post this week. But I have also been extremely busy on the farm with family and friends over what is the Easter long weekend here in Canada.
So I am taking a page from a famous Substack writer
whom I admire, and doing what Heather does in these situations - which is to send out a brief message to let her readers know she is taking a short break.I just want to let you all know, that I will be back next week with more writing on our mind-body-food connections and growing food.
In the meantime, so much is happening on the farm right now. I just finished the new duck house pictured below last week. I have to admit to being pretty proud of myself. I built this 8x8 ft little building all by myself from the ground up, including installing my first ever metal roof. I’ve come such a LONG way from not being able to put anything at all together or cut a piece of wood to the right size! That means this duck house is the best I’ve build so far.
And the ducks seem pretty happy to be moving in.

I built it with double front doors so that it is divided into two pens for the summer, to keep my breeding lines of Silver Appleyard ducks sorted out. But I can remove the divider for winter when the ducks prefer to be in one big flock together.
I’ll save the story of how I became the keeper of these ducks for another day, but so you understand Silver Appleyards are quite a rare breed of duck, and I keep two different lines of them. That means their eggs are quite important and I ship eggs across Canada to other aficionados of this breed.
But today is Easter Sunday, April 20th, and I will be heading up to the creek with my neighbors to help set up our irrigation system for this season.
I’ll catch up with you all next week - on our regular schedule.
In the meantime, happy spring, and happy growing.
Sue
The duck house looks amazing! The setting from what I can see looks beautiful. Thanks for the post that wasn't a post!
Thanks for the pics of the duck house. I've been toying with the idea of getting some ducks so it's nice to see housing ideas. Hope they enjoy it!
