I love food forests!!! We purchased a lot last summer and I just want to get out there and plant trees!! As a Herbalist I want to focus on medicinal trees that will grow here (I'm in southern Manitoba) but aren't found in local forests. I can't wait to get started.

Ps: have you heard of Forest Garden Greenhouses? As a prairie girl, I love the idea. . .someday, when I'm rich. 😂

That's awesome Adrienne! There are some great options for medicinal trees. That's why I am adding chasteberry this year, as an example.

Yes I have heard of forest greenhouses - my sister is in 70 Mile where the winters are too cold for many fruit trees, but she has built a greenhouse that is partly in the ground and has actual apples on her little trees and it's early April! Very exciting stuff.

I just looked up "Best food forest trees and shrubs for zone 9." I live in a neighborhood with an HOA, but I can get away with semi-wild agriculture. I love this perspective and thinking of ways I can add more food to my little patch of Earth. I'm looking at options for blueberries where we took out the shrubs along the side of the house. Thanks for the idea!

I am so glad you found it useful. I too love the challenge of looking at my landscape and asking questions about how to add more food into the landscape. What fun.

Thanks for the heads up about Zero Fox (possibly the best name ever) Nursery. I'm helping with a food forest at the school in Tofino and we're in the market for some new fruit trees so I'll take a look. (I also had to look up the location of Harrop -- I've lived in BC all my life and had never heard of it!) Great post. Thank you.

This is my second tree order and the quality is outstanding. I’m glad you checked out their link. I loved my visit to Torino back in 2019! Wonderful part of the island. Good luck with your food forest adventure!
